Jen had a child care conference to attend so Brad was here with the kids from 12:00pm until close.
Happy May Day! We have a quiet day today so we're sugaring up with some extra reading time this morning. We learned about how mammals in the ocean, like dolphins and whales have to breathe air, just like us, in order to live. We colored dolphins in art and played outside for a while.

We're having a crabby Thursday…but in a good way! We're learning about crabs and lobsters and other crustaceans that live in the ocean. We played a crab tag game which was super fun to watch and we made crabs in art. The kids spent hours outside today. We have little blue flowers and dandelions popping up in the backyard and the kids have been picking me bouquets all day.
The kids are having so much fun learning about the ocean! We filled one of our large sensory bins full of water and used different things to make waves outside today! We learned that the ocean is filled with fish, mammals, crustaceans and amphibians! We explored a starfish today and made a starfish using cheerios for suction cups in art. We got to spend lots of time today enjoying the beautiful weather.
Today we learned the names of all the oceans. We brought out some pictures and video of the ocean so the kids could see and hear the waves. We put some shells in our sensory bin for the week and the kids are having a fun time inspecting the different shells with our magnifying glasses. We baked some banana bread and started decorating some colorful fish for an art project we will finish tomorrow.
We discovered today that Sand also starts with the letter S and so do seashells! We're starting our new theme this week, Under the Ocean, which will cover about two weeks! We didn't get beach week done during spring break so this will be a spin off of that. We will have a beach day next week sometime once we see what day will be warmest. We're kicking the theme off by learning all about the ocean. We learned today that the ocean water is salty! The kids got to taste some salt water and we painted waves in art with our hands. Our letter this week is S, for sea. We spent lots of time outside today and baked muffins for breakfast in the morning.
**I have a conference to go to on Friday so Brad will be here with the little ones in the afternoon. ***I've posted the menu for the week so you can have a look at that when you have time. ****Tomorrow is PJ Day! Make sure your child wears PJs they can wear outside or has an extra change of clothes to change into when we do go out. We learned about Buckingham Palace in England and had a friend bring some souvenirs from England to share at circle time! We learned cars drive on the other side of the road in England and drivers sit on the other side of the car! We made scones and colored pictures of palace guards. We also spent lots of time outside even though it was pretty chilly out.
Today we're learning more about some of the traditional foods from England, and we're having a tea party at snack this afternoon! The kids learned today that tea is a big part of the culture in England so they will get to sample some (caffeine free) tea this afternoon. We made crumpets to serve with jam at our tea party and our discussion about "fish and chips", which is on the menu for lunch this week, led to more discussion about how, even though we speak english here in America, some of the words we use have different meaning in England. A notebook, for example, can be called a pad in England, a flat, is an apartment and so on. All the kids are very intrigued by our study of England, more so than our previous imaginary travels.
It's a cold and gloomy day outside so we staying in this morning and did some baking. We made the Union Jack flag, which is the flag of England and learned a little bit about what the different colors symbolize. We started talking about some of the different foods you might find in England and that conversation led to candy (of course…ha ha) so we learned that in England, they some of the same brand names of candy we have here but they are a little different. They have Kit Kats and Rolos but the packaging does not look like it does here. We ordered some today, straight from England so we could try it and compare it to the U.S. variety. I think I'm more excited about this than the kids are.
Tomorrow the sun should be peeking out again so we will be going back out, even though it will be colder than it has been. Please make sure your child is dressed warm enough to enjoy their time outside. Thanks! We're off to England this week and the kids are super excited! Today we're learning all about England's Queen and Princes and Princesses! We made crowns with jewels in art and found England on a map. We learned how someone becomes a King or Queen and the kids are officially on royal baby watch as we wait for Princess Kate to have her new little Prince or Princess!
I've posted the menu for the week so you can have a look at that when you have time. If any of our parents have been fortunate enough to have traveled to England and have any souvenirs you would like to allow your child to share at circle time this week, we would love that! Today we have a small group so we're doing some cleaning and organizing both indoors and out. We went through all the toys in our sandbox, finished cleaning up the seed mess our silly squirrels left us and brought out some of our summer toys from the shed. We baked apple fritters for breakfast and practiced using scissors to cut leaves and buds in art. It's such a beautiful day we spent most of it outdoors soaking up the sunshine!
