Today we finished up the chicken part of our egg theme by making eggs in a basket. We talked about all the other animals that live on a farm and what makes each one important. We played outside and the kids each pretended to be a different animal. We had some silly pigs, horses, cows and sheep.

Today we talked about chickens and eggs. We also talked a little bit about what life on a farm is like, the early mornings, the hard work and the schedules. We scrambled some eggs to sample and played an egg toss game and played egg bowling. We also hid eggs around the house and pretended to be the farmers going to collect the eggs.
We have our school age friends visiting again this week and the kids are loving having the older children around. We kicked off farm week this week (finally) and today we are talking about dairy farms. We talked about where milk comes from and what products are made from milk. We sampled cottage cheese, yogurt, chedder cheese and of coarse ice cream. We made cow pictures and played outside for quite a while today.
Today is the first day of no school and we had some visitors, a couple of school age friends that graduated from Jen's program a few years ago. Today is also a sad day for me, Tyler is graduating from our program today so we are having a going away party for him. We baked and decorated cookies for the party. We also collected outdoor items and used paint to make outdoor prints. I also had to kiss Lydia goodbye for the summer. She will be back at the end of summer but will visit here and there this summer.
Here's to a fun summer! We have lots of things planned starting with farm week next week. For a full list of our weekly themes go to the newsletter. Our little Lainey is turning one tomorrow and since she won't be here we are having her birthday party today! We are baking and decorating cupcakes and will be opening presents after naptime. We also made kites today using plastic bags and string and the kids have been flying their kites in the backyard. We made homemade bubbles and read some books outside today.
Today is also Jessie's last day for the summer. She will be returning the last week in August when our school year only families return. Today we made sunny pictures and then talked about how the weather can change quickly. We took our sunny pictures and sprinkled them with blue rain (blue paint) and our sunny day pictures turned into rainy day pictures.
We got lots of fresh air today and the mosquitos have been popping up here and there. I use the Off Family Skintastic bug spray and all the kids will need to have this or some other type of bug repellant on on the days the mosquitos seem extra hungry so if you prefer your child use a different brand either send it along or let me know which kind and I will provide it. I have posted the menu for the week and will have a summer newsletter posted by the end of the day so be sure to read through that when you have time. Today we discussed extreme weather and safety. We talked about hurricanes, tornados, hail storms and high winds. We did a storm drill and reinforced that the we stay away from window and door when there are dangerous storms. We talked about where to go at home if a bad storm happened and I would encourage all of you to approach this subject with your children as well. We try to keep it light and make it fun when we do storm drills here and I would encourage you to do the same. The kids have flashlights they can use here and we all sit on a mat and the kids actually have fun with it. This is important in the event of a real emergency they would be excited to go into our "storm fort" and wouldn't be afraid.
We also made a "hurricane" in a bucket of water and pretended to be tornados in the backyard spinning and spinning. Today we continued our discussion about weather and talked today about rain but most importantly, rainbows! We made rainbows with cut up construction paper and talked about how rainbows are made. We looked up pictures of rainbows on the computer and the kids all shared about rainbows they have seen.
We also spent lots of time outside today. Today we talked about temperatures and some of the changes that come with hot and cold weather. We did an experiment with hot water in a jar and watched the steam build up and then we tried the same thing with cold water. We talked about the temperature outside and what numbers mean hot and which ones would be cold.
