**Reminder** We are closed tomorrow, Friday, July 1 - Tuesday, July 5, 2016.
We're learning about eggs today and the kids got the chance to dissect eggs. They learned about the different parts of the egg and made eggs in art to go with their vulture nests. They had fun playing school for a while and we spent lots of time outside taking frequent breaks due to the heat.

It's W for Woodpecker today and we learned how woodpeckers find food in the trees by using their beaks like a hammer. We made woodpeckers in art and spent lots of time outside this morning. Today is the first time we have had all eight friends here in a while and the kids were very excited. We ended up breaking up into smaller groups for part of the morning so they wouldn't get too overwhelmed. Addie was teacher again for a while and the kids were very eager students as they played school together! They are digging summer break having her hear each morning to share new toys and lead new games. They played musical chairs, bear hunt and a dancing game for a while shortly after breakfast today.
It's V for Vulture today and we learned that some birds, like vultures, eat really big animals! We made vulture nests in art and also brought the Robin's nest from our deck inside so the kids could look at it through our magnifying glasses. We found many interesting things used to build that nest and we also saw some feathers! We got to spend lots of time outdoors today and Addie led circle time this morning and played school with the kids, which they loved! It's funny how captivated they were as Addie worked with them on letter recognition when they have a much harder time staying focused when I'm the one working with them on their letters!
We're nearing the end of the alphabet and this week, all our letters animals will be birds! We'll also be learning more about birds in general and doing some bird activities we weren't able to get to when we studied birds earlier this year with our birds and bees theme. Today it was U for umbrella bird! We made umbrella birds in art and learned a little bit about the rainforest where they live. We talked a little bit about why our home, Minnesota would not be a good home for a tropical bird like the umbrella bird. We weren't able to get much time outdoors in the morning due to the trees being cut down next door. The kids were super excited to watch this all transpire from indoors though! Their little eyes got HUGE the first time they watched one drop into our backyard.
We're having a quiet Friday and the kids are playing very nicely together! We baked some banana bread and made animal snack packs in art. We read about the turtle and the hare, because T is for Turtle and the kids wanted to use their rabbit masks to have rabbit races again. We got to spend lots of time outside today and also did some organizing and rotating of our toys.
I'll be working on compiling the summer 2017 newsletter over the weekend so if you plan to be gone, let me know so I can take that into consideration as I'm scheduling our "fun days". S is for snake today and we're learning all about where snakes live and what they eat. The kids remembered our elephant and mouse game so when they heard snakes eat mice they insisted on playing on snake and mouse game. We baked some more muffins and spent a good part of our morning outdoors. The mosquitos found us and for the first time today we had to use bug spray. Please let me know if your child develops any issues with the brand we use. We painted snakes in art and the kids developed a newfound interest in our puzzles, which kept them busy quite a while.
We're celebrating a birthday today! Our Kate is turning two and the kids were so excited to bake and decorate cupcakes, wrap presents and play make a ball toss game to play. I love watching them get so excited to give and work so hard to make the day special for one of their friends! They have such big hearts and really do love each other - it makes me so proud of them. We also baked some muffins for breakfast today and made R is for Rabbit masks in art. We saw rabbits in the backyard all morning and the kids practiced wiggling their noses like rabbits.
We're knocking out two letters today with P is for porcupine and q is for quills. We picked some pine needles off the pine trees and used them to make the quills on a porcupine we painted in art. We learned some fascinating facts about porcupines and spent lots of time outdoors today. We've been paying close attention to our berry plants and our apple tree, the kids are fascinated watching them grow!
The kids were super excited to see one another after the extra long weekend so it was a little difficult getting them to stop their play to work on our curriculum. We skipped circle time since there was zero interest but I did manage to get them to the art table to make an octopus for the letter O and they were happy to read books before nap. We spent lots of time outdoors today and they were all extra tired and slept very well.
I've posted the menu for the week so you can have a look at that when you have time. Another busy day today as we wrap up our special gifts for Dad! The kids are so excited to surprise Dad that I'm not sure they will be able to wait until Sunday! We baked some cookies today, which we will have for snack and got to spend lots of time outside running in the sprinkler this morning.
I'd like to take some time to give a huge shout out to all the Dads as we celebrate Father's Day this weekend. I love your children so much and I thank God that they have such wonderful Dads to go home to each night. They look up to you, probably more than you realize and I so enjoy hearing them talk about the fun things you do with them and the different ways you help them learn. They think the world of you and because of that, I do too. Thank you for being such wonderful Dads! I hope you have a relaxing and fun Father's Day weekend celebrating with your families! |
