We're cruising up the east coast today in our cruise ship and stopping over in the Carolinas. We decided to spend some time on Myrtle Beach and talked about some of the different kind of sea and plant life we might see if we were there. We made beach pictures in art and got to spend lots of time outside this morning! The mosquitos were much less problematic today so we plan to spend most of the afternoon out there as well.

We decorated our huge "cruise ship" (big box) and boarded it this morning leaving Florida behind and heading North to Georgia! We learned some fun facts about the peach state and painted peach trees in art. The kids were super excited because Claire was back today! They were not very interested in the curriculum and really just wanted to play together. We were out for a short time in the morning after spraying and were able to spend lots of time outdoors in the afternoon. Although we've sprayed the yard, and that has helped, we will continue using bug spray until the mosquitos are less active.
It's the last week of summer on our child care calendar and we have so much left to do! We have so many states left and not much time to take our imaginary travels to them all so we are starting our week off with Florida today and we will be boarding a pretend cruise ship from here tomorrow and traveling up the east coast, learning about all those eastern states in the process. We learned today that Florida is bordered by ocean on all sides of the state except the north; the gulf on the west and the Atlantic on the east. We showed the kids some pictures from Florida and the kids used seashells from Florida today to make shell rubbings in art. We also talked about some of the tropical plants that grow in warm states like Florida, like palm trees and some fruit trees, that don't grow well in the North, where we live.
I've posted the menu for the week so you can check that out when you have time. We spent lots of time outside today in spite of the clouds and the kids had a blast playing in the wet sand (sorry in advance for how dirty they are!). We rode our imaginary horses down to Texas today and we're learning all about the lone star state! We learned that there's a ranch in Texas bigger than the state of Rhode Island and more wool comes from Texas than any other state, so we are herding sheep again today. We made cowboy vests in art to wear while we play wild, wild west. We panned for gold outside and had a cowboy lunch picnic (until the bees came - then we moved our lunch indoors).
***Reminder*** We are closed Monday and Tuesday. These are unpaid vacation days. Thank you for making alternate arrangements for your child during this time. We left our sheep in New Mexico and we're herding our cattle through Oklahoma today because there are far more cows in Oklahoma than sheep. We learned the soil is red in some places because it's so rich with iron, which the kids were very intrigued by. We checked the dirt into our backyard but all of it was black. We made cowboy collages in art and read the Oklahoma chapter in our 50 states book. We learned a little bit about the role dogs can play in herding cattle and we spent lots of time outside this morning soaking up the sun!
We're saddling up for next few days as we visit some of our southern states, beginning with New Mexico today! We learned that Cimarron, New Mexico was once known as the cowboy capital of the world! We also learned that there are more sheep and cows than people and we talked about how ranchers ride horses to herd their cattle and sheep from one place to another. We decorated cowboy boots in art to hang on our bulletin board and each of the kids had to name their imaginary horse that they will ride through Texas and Oklahoma over the next few days. We also spent a lot of time outside today so the kids may be a little more tired than normal.
We're off to Wyoming and the Yellowstone National Park today. We sang the song, "Home on the Range" today and learned some fun facts about buffalos. We learned what a geyser is and will be making one of our own this afternoon! The kids have spent so much time outside today that they all fell fast asleep within a few minutes this afternoon.
With all the vacations and illness this summer, we've ended up changing or rescheduling some of our planned activities and I didn't get a summer newsletter done. I am currently working on the fall one to be put out before this weekend. If you know of any days your child will be gone, let me know so I can plan around those days as much as possible. ***Reminder*** We are closed Monday and Tuesday next week. These are unpaid vacation days. We're off to Colorado today and the kids learned about altitude. We looked at pictures from Colorado where the grass was green but the mountains had snow on them. The kids were very intrigued by this. We did an experiment to see if they could feel a difference in temperature by climbing to the very top of the play center. They said they could...ha ha.
We made beautiful mountains in art to hang on our bulletin board today and spent lots of time outside. I've posted the menu for the week so you can check that out when you have time. It was a much brighter day today and everyone seems back to normal and happy! We baked some chocolate chip mini muffins, which we enjoyed for breakfast (hmmm...maybe this is why they had such a good day). We learned some fun things about Utah today including that the first transcontinental railroad was completed there. The kids used our chairs to make a train and we decorated train cars in art. We got to spend a little time outside dancing in the rain this morning and the rest of our day was spent indoors.
We've got some very fussy little ones today. Not sure if they are just tired or coming down with something buy they all seemed ready for bed by 10:00am. It was a struggle to keep them up and happy until nap time today so we didn't get much time for our curriculum. We did get to learn a little bit about Arizona today and read our Arizona book. I showed the kids some pictures of the dessert and Camelback mountain from when I went there a few years ago. We also put some finishing touches on some of our art projects, including adding some prickles to our cactuses! I ended up changing the menu today because the kids did NOT want sloppy joes and I'm choosing my battles today. :-)
We did spend close to 2 hours outdoors this morning, which is the only time everyone seemed happy. |
